Schulze Remains Calm Over Internal Dissent as CDU Battles AfD Ministerial Bid

Sven Schulze, the current Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt, has reacted calmly to the announcement made by his former faction leader, Guido Heuer, stating that Heuer would not leave the chamber during the vote concerning a potential AfD Minister-President, Ulrich Siegmund. Schulze told the news channel “Welt” that he had suspected beforehand that Heuer would not join the boycott organized by the other CDU faction members.

Schulze explained that Heuer had announced this in the CDU faction meeting previously. The CDU had decided at that time-with 14 votes-to withdraw entirely from the state parliament. Heuer himself had indicated that he would abstain during this particular vote, as he wished to review certain legal issues. Ultimately, the faction offered a detailed statement, clearly signaling that no CDU votes would be cast for the AfD.

The CDU faction resolution confirmed that no votes from the party would support an AfD candidate. Consequently, the ball is currently entirely in the AfD’s court. If the AfD adheres to its electoral campaign promises, it faces a significant problem. Siegmund can only expect support from his own faction. Sasha Wagenknecht’s BSW (BSW) has made it clear that it will only abstain starting the first round of voting, while all other factions have stated they will not vote for an AfD candidate. This means Siegmund theoretically lacks a majority in the parliament.
