Johannes Winkel, the head of the Young Union, expressed concern over the lack of substantive ideas originating from his own party within the current ruling coalition. Speaking to “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” Winkel questioned whether public statements made to coalition partners were truly helpful, particularly in light of recent admonishments issued by CDU leader Friedrich Merz to the SPD. He stressed that the focus should instead be on bolstering strength during internal negotiations, noting that the Union needs more of its own developed concepts to achieve this. In response, the Young Union and young members within the CDU parliamentary group have been attempting to formulate such plans, exemplified by a recently presented tax concept.
Winkel also criticized statements coming from his own ranks regarding a potential early break from the coalition. Calling for a more measured approach, he warned, “We should dial down the rhetoric. It does not appear particularly sovereign to fall into a panic”. He argued that the coalition must establish its political work with seriousness and collaboration, suggesting that they must “tone down the rhetoric while simultaneously enhancing the substance”. This critique comes shortly after influential CDU politician Christian von Stetten publicly suggested that the center-right coalition might not last for the entire legislative term.
Ultimately, Winkel stated that the coalition requires a “higher-level narrative”-a compelling explanation for why the numerous planned reforms are necessary for the country’s future. He argued that this falls to the top political leaders. Currently, he lamented that instead, different factions and government members are getting lost in petty disputes over isolated details.
