CDU’s Fish Sandwich Campaign Sparks Political Culture Clash Against the Left

A political dispute has erupted in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, pitting the Left party against the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) over a campaign poster featuring a “Fischbrötchen” (fish sandwich). The CDU had deployed posters showing Chancellor Friedrich Merz eating the sandwich, coupled with the slogan, “Content instead of fish sandwiches.”

The Left party has leveraged this visual debate to launch a sharp attack on the CDU’s overall platform. Landeschef Hennis Herbst told T-Online that the CDU-MV is attempting to obscure criticisms of the federal government’s poverty reforms and the Chancellor’s economic policies by focusing on fish sandwiches and cheap slogans. He dismissed these efforts as attempts to dazzle the voters.

Herbst intensified his criticism by stating that the CDU is slashing social welfare programs and failing to provide solutions for the widespread “price crisis” that citizens face daily, whether paying rent, shopping at the supermarket, or filling up their cars. Following the logic that those who present a superficial campaign but later demand cuts and higher burdens deserve a clear answer, Herbst echoed the slogan, “The fish stinks from the head.” He concluded that while the CDU might talk about fish sandwiches, the Left is concerned with whether the average person will be able to afford them after any budget cuts.

The CDU responded swiftly to the Left’s campaign. Lead candidate Daniel Peters informed T-Online that fish is nutritious, providing protein, vitamins, and minerals that are beneficial for both the brain and nerves. He even suggested that an occasional “Fischbrötchen” could be beneficial for some members of the Left party. Peters also noted that while the CDU campaign was sympathetic to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, he found excessive aggression, bordering on glorifying violence, among political parties on both the left and right flanks. This led him to emphasize that the center, represented by the CDU, is the best option.

It is worth noting that the CDU’s campaign utilizing fish sandwich posters faced criticism from some members of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) who questioned whether the fish featured was actually sourced from the region.
