China’s ambassador to Germany, Deng Hongbo, has strongly urged the European Union to abandon its current trade restrictions against China. In an op-ed published in the business newspaper “Handelsblatt”, Deng wrote that the EU would be “not doing itself any favors with its plans for protectionist measures, which narrow cooperation, protect outdated industries, and ultimately jeopardize its own future.” He argues that trade barriers, such as tariffs, directly contradict market laws and that European companies and consumers are ultimately the ones who suffer as a result.
Instead of isolationism, Deng advocates for cooperation. He maintains that an open investment climate would revitalize the market and boost competitiveness, whereas restrictions would diminish economic efficiency and resilience.
According to the ambassador, China has consistently lowered restrictions on foreign investment, while Europe frequently targets Chinese investments. Deng points out, “This not only dampens corporate confidence but also harms Europe’s own interests.” He cited the battery factory of Chinese manufacturer CATL in Thuringia, which has created over 2,000 jobs, as a specific example. Furthermore, the Chinese ambassador appealed to Germany, asking it not to be swayed by “emotional tones” but to overcome prejudices using rationality.
