The SPD faction, specifically the group “DL21 Forum Demokratische Linke,” has strongly criticized the decisions made by the Coalition Committee. In a document reported on by the newspaper Spiegel, the party’s left wing argues that proposals such as expanding fixed-term employment contracts or abolishing the requirement for telephone reporting when sick directly attack employees. They view these measures as symptomatic of an authoritarian class struggle led from above.
According to their statement, economic associations, the Union, and other groups are exploiting the country’s genuine economic challenges as a pretext to push through cuts to social welfare and assault workers’ rights. Consequently, the critics predict that social decline will result rather than any economic upswing.
Regarding the higher tax on the wealthy agreed upon by the Coalition Committee, the party’s left wing considers it a step in the right direction. However, they state that it falls far short of what is necessary for sustainably funding the welfare state. The position paper emphasizes that greater wealth should be drawn upon to finance the public interest, although this requires courage to “truly shift societal power dynamics.”
Furthermore, the party’s leftist group observes that the SPD is primarily focused within the coalition on preventing worse outcomes. They describe the party’s actions as “moderating, accepting compromises, defending against attacks on one front, but making concessions on another.” They conclude that this approach causes the party to lose its credibility as a representative of working people.
