Following the drone incident at Leipzig Airport, Friedrich Merz (CDU) stated that Germany is facing a concrete threat to the nation. During the start of the cabinet session at Schloss Neuhardenberg on Tuesday, he remarked that while the government had entered the summer with good and brave decisions, the drone attack in Leipzig demonstrated that they are facing a tangible threat. Merz emphasized that Germany has become increasingly targeted by hybrid aggressors, who are increasingly acting recklessly and showing no restraint in causing severe material damage, and are even willing to accept injuries and fatalities in the process.
The Chancellor added that the nature of the Leipzig attack will not be debated for the time being, though the matter will be presented and addressed “shortly.” He described the meeting in Brandenburg as a working session, noting that the group focused on targeted exchange and dialogue with entrepreneurs from industry and crafts, as well as technology companies and startups.
Another major topic slated for discussion on Wednesday at the cabinet meeting is climate adaptation. Merz explained that his responsibility is to properly assess the situation, make the right decisions, and, crucially, draw long-term lessons from extreme situations such as the recent heat summer. The drought, heatwaves, forest fires, and crop failures highlighted the need for concrete action. Therefore, Merz concluded that while they must continue to mitigate climate change, they must concurrently improve the country’s resilience to the consequences of global warming.
