Following the verdict against former RAF member Daniela Klette, the CDU parliamentary group is calling for a far more resolute approach to combating left-wing extremism. CDU deputy parliamentary group leader Günter Krings told the “Rheinische Post” that the tumultuous reactions observed in the courtroom after the judgment underscored the necessity of taking left-wing extremism as a whole much more seriously.
According to Krings, the ruling against Klette demonstrates that the rule of law is vigilant. He noted that even decades spent in hiding ultimately provided no protection from criminal prosecution and conviction. He stressed that anyone who commits acts involving heavily armed assaults, violence, or millions in damage should expect severe prison sentences. At the same time, the case serves as a reminder that the terrorist actions of the Red Army Faction constitute a dark chapter in German history. These acts left deep scars on victims, their families, and on the integrity of the legal state. It is precisely for this reason that such crimes must be consistently and thoroughly addressed.
The CDU politician further stated that this danger was, at times, inadequately downplayed or even romanticized over the years. He emphasized that anyone who attempts to ideologically justify violence against the police, the state, or property is directly attacking the foundations of our democratic rule of law. To address this, Krings demanded that security agencies be granted stronger powers, improved capabilities for digital investigations, and consistent prosecution of extremist networks.
