Craftsmen Call to Halt Proposed €1,000 Stimulus, Urge Better Support Measures

Facing sharp criticism from the business sector, the Central Association of German Crafts (ZDH) is urging the federal government to immediately halt plans for a relief premium exceeding 1,000 euros per employee. Jörg Dittrich, President of the ZDH, stated to the “Bild-Zeitung” that it would be best if the state quickly withdrew this “unprincipled idea” and replaced it with an alternative proposal. He emphasized that any new measures must genuinely provide relief for businesses that are actively contributing to the economy. Dittrich criticized the premium as both socially unjust and economically flawed, arguing that it wrongly shifts responsibility onto businesses that are already under significant strain. Furthermore, he stated that the policy risks undermining social cohesion in the country, which is the last thing needed at this time. The core issue, according to Dittrich, is not whether the funds should be paid, but whether the businesses can afford it. He noted that many craft operations find themselves unfairly in a difficult position despite working diligently and innovating. He pointed to cancellations from public sector representatives due to funding limitations as evidence of the current difficulties. This situation risks creating a two-tiered society between those who can afford to pay and those who cannot, leading to disappointment among employees and frustration among business owners-a sentiment visible in the escalating level of public debate.
