CSU Sees Strong Chances for Ilse Aigner in Presidential Race Amid Political Backing

With praise coming from Thuringian Minister-President Mario Voigt (CDU) and Saxon Minister-President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) for Bavarian State Parliament President Ilse Aigner (CSU), CSU General Secretary Martin Huber sees strong opportunities for Aigner to be nominated by the Union for the office of Federal President. Huber told the “Rheinische Post” (Thursday edition) that “This support shows the high acceptance of a candidate who would have good chances of achieving a strong result in the first round of voting. This would simultaneously mean a strong result for the democratic center.” The Federal Convention is scheduled to elect a successor to Frank-Walter Steinmeier on January 30th. Any member of the Federal Convention can submit suggestions for the Federal President’s election in writing to the President of the Bundestag. The Union holds the majority of seats in the Federal Convention and could potentially form a majority with the SPD. Although no official nomination has been made yet, Söder had previously put Bavarian State Parliament President Ilse Aigner (CSU) forward in April.
