Despite Turmoil, EU Insists on Deeper Partnership with Turkey Amid Political Crackdown

Despite recent severe actions taken by Turkish authorities against the opposition CHP party, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul of the CDU continues to advocate for a closer partnership between the EU and Turkey.

Confirming this stance, a spokesperson for the Foreign Office told the dts Nachrichtenagentur on Wednesday that the commitment to the partnership remains firm even following the latest developments. The spokesperson emphasized that Turkey constitutes a critical NATO ally and a strategic partner. “This does not prevent us from critically discussing sensitive issues, and we certainly do that” the spokesperson added, noting that these discussions take place in bilateral talks and, where appropriate, in public.

The diplomatic defense comes in the wake of escalating political turmoil within Turkey. Over the weekend, the headquarters of the CHP party was raided by police forces. This action followed a ruling by a Turkish court that dismissed CHP leader Özgür Özel. During subsequent protests by CHP supporters, authorities responded with the use of tear gas and water cannons.
