Yasmin Fahimi was re-elected as the chairwoman of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB). At the DGB Federal Congress held in Berlin on Monday, she secured the approval of approximately 96 percent of delegates. The vote breakdown showed 37 delegates supporting Fahimi, with 15 opposing and three abstentions. No opposing candidates were nominated.
During the opening of the four-day congress, the DGB chief issued warnings regarding potential attacks on the welfare state and existing labor rights. She criticized attempts to question the established eight-hour workday and described efforts to “hollow out” social security systems. Fahimi announced that the DGB plans to draw “clear red lines” in the ongoing reform debates.
Fahimi previously served as the Secretary-General of the SPD. Since May 2022, she has held the position of DGB chairwoman, having been first elected with a result of around 93 percent. Following the board elections, the congress agenda includes several major political speeches. Highlights include a talk by Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) on Monday evening, a speech from Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) scheduled for Tuesday morning, and a presentation by Labor Minister Bärbel Bas (SPD) on Tuesday afternoon.
