The German federal government has welcomed the extension of the ceasefire between the US and Iran. According to a statement published on Thursday, this development “opens an important opportunity to continue diplomatic negotiations in Islamabad with the aim of achieving peace and averting a war escalation”. The statement added that Tehran should also seize this opening.
The federal government urges Iran to halt its military nuclear program and cease threatening Israel and other neighboring states. Furthermore, it emphasizes that the Strait of Hormuz must remain “permanently, reliably, and without restrictions or fees”.
Should a comprehensive agreement be reached, the German government stated it is prepared to gradually loosen existing restrictive measures alongside its partners. Conversely, if Iran continues to block the Strait of Hormuz, the federal government is ready to discuss additional sanctions. Ultimately, once a sustained end to hostilities is achieved, the German government intends to contribute with its partners to the free shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
The statement concluded by reiterating that the federal government will continue to exert diplomatic efforts toward achieving a permanent end to the conflict in southern Lebanon.
