Katharina Dröge, the leader of the Green party faction, has called on Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to use his upcoming five-day trip to Asia to establish a “Coalition of Opposition” against Russia, China, and the United States. Dröge stated to media outlets of “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that dependable partners are necessary for Europe in a time when the Trump administration is undermining the international order, Putin is waging a brutal war against Ukraine, and China is striving for dominance through its growing economic and military influence.
Dröge urged Merz to leverage his journey to Singapore, Japan, and South Korea, which begins Monday, to deepen strategic partnerships and foster alliances in favor of a rules-based international order. She emphasized that stable bonds are required between countries committed to fair collaboration and upholding international law. The Green politician further insisted that Merz must take advantage of the trip to actively campaign for this “Coalition of Opposition.”
Singapore, Japan, and South Korea are identified as central partners in this mission. Dröge expects Merz to actively advocate for this vision during his travels, initiate concrete steps toward its implementation, and simultaneously ensure close coordination with his European counterparts.
