EKD President Calls for Greater Solidarity Against Rising Antisemitism in Germany

The Chairwoman of the Catholic Church in Germany (EKD), Kirsten Fehrs, is calling for greater solidarity with Jews in Germany, citing the growing numbers of antisemitic incidents presented by the German Association RIAS on Wednesday morning.

Fehrs told the Tagesspiegel that antisemitism remains, and is unfortunately becoming increasingly, a harsh reality for Jewish people in the country. The current statistics vividly illustrated this reality, making clear the fear and threats under which Jewish people must live today.

“As a church, we are committed to actively and collectively advocating for the ability of Jewish people to live openly, visibly, and safely in Germany,” Fehrs stated. She insisted that Jewish life must be possible without fear. Furthermore, she stressed that “any form of antisemitism, any threat, or any trivialization of Jewish security is also an attack on our democracy, contradicting our Christian self-understanding and our responsibility within this country.” Finally, the EKD Chairwoman called specifically on all Christians to show visible solidarity with their Jewish brothers and sisters.
