Regarding the ongoing debate about potentially reintroducing a “windfall tax,” the Federal Network Agency has provided figures detailing the impact of this measure during the 2022 energy crisis. According to reports, over 900 million Euros have been collected through the clawback mechanism so far. The agency spokesperson told the newspaper that since several further collection processes are still pending, it cannot be ruled out that the billion-Euro benchmark will be surpassed. In total, roughly 12,000 operators of power generation facilities were obliged to report data to calculate these excess profits. This levy was part of the government’s introduction of a power price brake in response to the energy crisis following Russia’s attack on Ukraine, requiring electricity producers to contribute based on profits generated above a certain level.
