According to a new European Union document, Russia is identified as the “most immediate, most significant, most direct, and longest-lasting security threat to the European continent.” This assessment stems from a threat analysis conducted by the European External Action Service (EEAS), which the newspaper “Welt am Sonntag” reported on. The EU Foreign Ministers plan to formally adopt the document, internally known as the “Common Understanding,” during their meeting in Brussels on Monday, after which it will be made public.
The security analysis specifically names the militarization of society and the shift toward a war economy, coupled with Russia’s concrete ambitions in strategic and technical areas such as nuclear matters and space, as a long-term threat to European security.
While the document publicly labels the United States as the “most important strategic partner,” diplomats informed “Welt am Sonntag” that the assessment of the US position is far more critical within the non-public, secret section of the text.
