EU Parliament Halts Investigations Into CSU Member Niebler Amid Misuse of Staff Allegations

The European Parliament has temporarily halted fraud investigations concerning CSU Member of European Parliament (MEP) Angelika Niebler. This was decided after a majority of MEPs rejected, on Tuesday in Strasbourg, a request from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) to lift Niebler’s parliamentary immunity.

The core of the allegations relates to the charge that Niebler allegedly used staff paid by the EU Parliament between 2017 and 2025 for tasks that were unconnected to her duties as a parliamentarian. Niebler has categorically dismissed these accusations, which were brought forward by a former employee.

Adding to the political context, the European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee had previously opposed lifting Niebler’s immunity in early May. At that time, the committee argued that the complaints were filed based on a “direct political motive”.

For greater context, Niebler has been a member of the European Parliament since 1999, and she also serves as the deputy chairwoman of the CSU.
