Political and electoral researcher Constantin Wurthmann expressed strong criticism regarding the demand to lower the 5% threshold in elections. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Wurthmann stated that he views any reduction of the hurdle with extreme skepticism, arguing that the current electoral system is specifically designed to prevent the fragmentation of the party system. According to Wurthmann, the fact that various parties remain below the five percent mark is not a justification for leniency, but rather grounds for the system to persist as it is. The political scientist suggested that if voters criticize not being represented in parliament, they should perhaps reconsider their voting decisions. This debate was initially sparked by Hans-Jürgen Papier, the former president of the Federal Constitutional Court. Early this week, Papier told the “Tagesspiegel” that the 5% threshold is “no longer contemporary.” The legal expert advocated for reducing the barrier in Bundestag elections from five to three percent.
