Faced with mounting budget deficits and fresh revenue shortfalls, the left-wing political party has launched strong criticism against the federal government, demanding structural reforms nationwide. According to Dietmar Bartsch, the party’s spokesperson on budget policy in the Bundestag, the national weakness is not caused by the Iran conflict, but rather by a federal government that is preoccupied with its internal disputes instead of addressing the nation’s real-world problems.
Bartsch criticized the Finance Minister for currently attempting to cover multi-billion euro budget gaps using “air bookings”. He warns that this method of artificial accounting is a “house of cards” that will not last indefinitely.
The left-wing party argues that Germany urgently requires structural reforms, particularly a genuine tax overhaul. This reform, they assert, should not be merely intended to plug existing budget holes, but must instead aim to relieve the financial burdens on working people and increase taxation on large assets and inheritances. For the group, this is not an ideological undertaking but a critical stimulus needed for the economy.
Furthermore, expert analysis conducted by the Working Group on Tax Estimates 2026 predicts a substantial downturn in tax revenues-forecasted to drop by 17.8 billion euros across federal, state, and municipal levels.
