Karamba Diaby, a former Social Democratic Party (SPD) member of the Bundestag who was born in Senegal and resides in Halle (Saale), has voiced concerns regarding the possibility of an AfD-led government in Saxony-Anhalt following the state election. In comments to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (Saturday editions), he stated that the election results in Saxony-Anhalt were worrying. Diaby expressed serious apprehension about the future of science, higher education institutions, and international cooperation should the AfD assume a governing role.
He noted that Saxony-Anhalt relies on immigration and the influx of young people due to its aging population structure. The state’s universities depend heavily on students and academics from other German states and from abroad. Diaby argued that a political stance questioning this international openness would constitute a step backward for the region. He emphasized the importance of society remaining vigilant and campaigning for cohesion, diversity, and a cosmopolitan Saxony-Anhalt, rather than for division. Diaby originally came to the GDR in the mid-1980s and served in the Bundestag from 2013 to 2025.
