SPD politician and current Berlin Economics Senator Franziska Giffey has stated that she is not ruling out a candidacy for the national SPD party chairmanship. Speaking to the magazine “Focus,” Giffey noted that she could not comment on the subject at the moment, adding that it was not currently a topic of discussion.
However, the politician expressed a preference that government officials not take on the role of party chairman, wishing instead to “distribute the burden a little.”
Lars Klingbeil currently leads the SPD alone, following the resignation of co-chair Bärbel Bas. Klingbeil holds the positions simultaneously as Federal Finance Minister and Deputy Chancellor. The SPD is scheduled to elect a new national chairman at its federal party conference on January 16 and 17, 2027, though it remains unclear who will stand for the position.
