Gender Divide Persists in German Vocational Training Choices, Show Stats

According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), noticeable gender differences remain when it comes to career choices in Germany. In 2024, the most frequently chosen apprenticeship profession among female trainees was Medical Assistant, accounting for 9.4 percent of all newly established training contracts. For male trainees, Vehicle Mechatronics Technician was the top choice, securing 7.5 percent of the contracts.

For female trainees, the second most popular choice for new contracts in 2024 was Office Management Clerk, with 8.8 percent, followed by Dental Assistant in third place (7.5 percent). Male trainees ranked Fachinformatiker (IT Specialist) second (5.0 percent) and Electrician third (4.6 percent).

Furthermore, significantly more men than women are completing vocational training in the dual system. Of the approximately 475,100 individuals who entered a new apprenticeship contract in Germany in 2024, nearly two-thirds (63.8 percent) were male.
