German Agriculture Faces Dual Crisis: Low Harvests Meet Soaring Costs and Unprofitable Prices

Joachim Rukwied, the president of the German Farmers’ Association, announced a disappointing agricultural harvest outlook for 2026. During interviews with RTL and ntv, Rukwied stated that the harvest was merely below average. He specifically noted that the wheat was disappointing, and the rapeseed yielded very poorly. Adding to the strain, Rukwied emphasized that the low yields were compounded by low prices, noting that the current price level is not sufficient to cover production costs. Furthermore, the association is bearing a heavy burden from operational costs, including energy, diesel, fertilizers, and crop protection agents. The Farmers’ President concluded by complaining that “everything is very expensive.”
