German Average Height Plateaus As Body Weight Rises, High BMI Rates Concern Health Officials

According to the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), based on the preliminary results of the 2025 Microcensus, the average German adult in 2025 stood at 1.73 meters tall and weighed 78.3 kilograms.

While the average height of adults has remained stable in recent years-it was also 1.73 meters in 2021, and 1.72 meters in 2017-the average weight has shown a slight increase. In 2021, the average German person weighed 77.7 kilograms, compared to 77.0 kilograms in 2017.

Looking specifically at gender differences, the average female in 2025 was 1.66 meters tall and weighed 69.7 kilograms. This means she was 13 centimeters shorter and 16.8 kilograms lighter than the average male, whose most recently reported weight averaged 86.5 kilograms, with an average height of 1.79 meters.

The data also reveals how physical metrics change with age. Adult height tends to decrease as one gets older; the tallest age group was 18 to 24 years old, averaging 1.75 meters, while the shortest group was those aged 75 and over, measuring 1.68 meters. Conversely, average weight increases up to middle age before declining again. The heaviest demographic is the 50 to 59 age group, averaging 81.3 kilograms, while the youngest individuals (18 to 24) are the lightest at 72.5 kilograms.

Regarding health, the World Health Organization defines adults with a Body-Mass-Index (BMI) over 25 as overweight, and those with a BMI over 30 as severely overweight (obese). In 2025, slightly over half of all adults in Germany (53.4 percent) were classified as overweight. Seventeen point nine percent of the population was considered severely overweight.

Men are more frequently overweight than women. In 2025, almost two-thirds of men (62.6 percent) had a BMI over 25, and one-fifth (19.9 percent) were obese. Among women, 43.8 percent were classified as overweight, and 15.8 percent were severely overweight with a BMI above 30.
