German Business Confidence Improves as Expectations Rise and Industrial Orders Increase

The sentiment among German companies has improved, with the Ifo Business Climate Index rising to 90.2 points in October, a slight uptick from 89.9 in September. This improvement was largely driven by more confident expectations for the future, although the assessment of the current situation remains somewhat weaker. Nonetheless, the economic recovery continues.

In the manufacturing sector, the index saw a substantial increase. Companies rated both their current situation and their outlook significantly better, marking the first time both indicators have been positive in more than three years. The rise in new orders is prompting companies to plan for increased production.

However, the services sector experienced a drag on the overall business climate, as companies reported lower satisfaction with ongoing business. Expectations, on the other hand, were better. Notably, IT service providers showed positive strength.

In the trade sector, the indicator remained flat. While retailers assessed their current operations negatively, their future expectations showed some improvement. Wholesale trade performed stronger than retail.

Finally, the construction industry saw an uplift in its index. Companies reported noticeably greater satisfaction with their current business, and their expectations also rose slightly.
