German Coalition Targets Summer Break for Pension Reform Passage While Health Insurance Push Continues

According to Dirk Wiese, the head of the SPD parliamentary group, the coalition intends to use the summer months to draft the recommendations put forth by the pension commission into formal legislation. Wiese told the “Rheinische Post” that the commission’s recommendations will first be discussed collaboratively with their coalition partners next week. Following that, the summer break is designated for developing corresponding legislative proposals.

Regarding the financial reform of the statutory health insurance system, Wiese stressed that the goal remains to see this reform cross the finish line before the summer pause. He noted that consultations between the parliamentary factions have been highly trusting on this matter, emphasizing that it is crucial to maintain stable contributions and distribute the burdens fairly across many shoulders.

Currently, however, the controversial savings package aimed at stabilizing health insurance contributions is not set for approval next week. Instead, it is scheduled for the final session week before the summer holiday, running from July 6th to July 10th, in the Bundestag. Meanwhile, the pension commission plans to present its 30 reform proposals on Tuesday.
