Henrik Wendorff, the president of the Brandenburg Farmers’ Association, stated that farmers across Germany are currently facing a difficult situation. Speaking on Tuesday to RBB-Inforadio, Wendorff highlighted that rising prices have been observed since the war in Ukraine. However, growing bottlenecks in the supply of fertilizer are being intensified by the recent closure of the Strait of Hormuz. “Fertilizer is as expensive as it has ever been, and crucially, it is not available” he stated, adding that this combination of two factors has been dramatically unprecedented.
Wendorff stressed that fertilizer is absolutely vital for agriculture, making the current situation critical. While predicting the price trajectory remains challenging, he anticipates a 50 percent increase. He warned that such escalation will drive up production costs for farmers exponentially, noting that “our production costs will increase exorbitantly”. He concluded by urging that short-term action must be taken to ensure this critically important commodity is available “in sufficient quality and quantity”.
