German Industry Order Backlog Climbs in June, Driven by Electronics and Machinery Orders

According to preliminary results released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Wednesday, the real order backlog in Germany’s manufacturing sector increased by 0.8 percent in June 2026 compared to May, after seasonally and calendar adjustments. When compared to the same month last year, the order backlog rose by 9.3 percent, adjusting for calendar effects.

The growth observed in June 2026 was primarily driven by an increase in the production of data processing equipment, electronic, and optical products, which saw a 4.6 percent rise over the previous month, adjusted for season and calendar. Furthermore, an increased volume in mechanical engineering (+0.9 percent) contributed positively to the overall result.

Examining the source of the orders, domestic orders grew by 1.2 percent between May and June 2026, while orders originating from abroad increased by 0.6 percent.

Segmentation by industry showed diverse trends. Manufacturers of consumer goods experienced a significant increase, with their order backlog rising by 3.2 percent. Conversely, the order backlog for producers of intermediate goods decreased slightly by 0.2 percent, although manufacturers of investment goods saw a moderate increase of 0.9 percent compared to the preceding month.

In terms of backlog coverage, the overall duration remained stable at 8.9 months in June compared to May. Specifically, manufacturers of intermediate goods held a constant coverage of 4.6 months, and manufacturers of investment goods maintained 12.4 months. Manufacturers of consumer goods saw a slight improvement in coverage, rising to 4.3 months, up from 4.2 months in May 2026.
