German Government to Fund Major Repair of Chernobyl Containment Dome

The German Federal Ministry for the Environment plans to assist Ukraine with up to 50 million Euros for the repair of the protective casing at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. This initiative was outlined in a document from the Federal Ministry of Finance to the Bundestag’s Budget Committee, as reported by the “Politico” newsletter “Energie und Klima.”

The ministry, led by Minister Carsten Schneider, is seeking authorization for a non-budgetary commitment in the 2026 fiscal year to fund this support, with the payment scheduled for 2027.

In 2025, the protective shielding over the damaged nuclear reactor in Chernobyl was compromised by a drone strike. The official statement emphasized that “a repair is urgently necessary to prevent permanent releases of radioactive material into the environment.” While the overall repair costs are estimated at a minimum of 500 million Euros-an amount Ukraine is likely unable to cover alone-Germany is offering significant support.

Minister Schneider is currently undertaking a multi-day trip to Ukraine, which includes a planned visit to Chernobyl.
