For at least the past 24 hours, the internet services provided by the Federal Employment Agency have been experiencing a severe outage. Agency spokespersons confirmed to “Die Welt” that several online tools on the agency’s website are currently non-functional, including the system for reporting unemployment and applying for unemployment benefits.
While the technical cause of the disruption remains unknown, the agency has described the issue as a “technical malfunction.” The spokesman noted that the agency is working hard to resolve the problem, but the institution has yet to either confirm or decisively rule out the possibility that a cyberattack is the source of the failure.
These technical problems arrive at a particularly challenging time for the agency’s users, given the strict reporting deadlines associated with the start of the month in German social law. For example, individuals who become unemployed on October 1st are legally required to register precisely on that specific date, as their claim for unemployment benefit is directly linked to that deadline. If the online portal remains inaccessible and applicants fail to switch to an in-person visit at a branch, their benefit claims for the duration of the downtime may expire. Recipients of the Bürgergeld social benefits are also facing potential losses if they cannot extend their entitlements online.
Customers began documenting the complete failure of the service yesterday across various internet forums, such as the Reddit community.
