German Municipalities Demand 32 Billion Euro Bailout to Prevent Service Collapse and Social Decay

Over 50 local representatives from German cities and districts have issued an urgent appeal to the Federal Chancellor and other responsible authorities. The action coalition “For the Dignity of Our Cities” states that the financial situation facing local governments is at a dramatic level, and is demanding a net financial relief of 32 billion euros annually. The signatories, which include mayors, district administrators, and city mayors, point out that the ability of local government to act is diminishing daily.

In their letter, the local officials outlined specific problems, such as poorly maintained roads and school bathrooms in need of renovation. They stressed that the financial distress of these municipalities also carries social consequences. They noted that a connection can be observed between the financial standing of local governments and the strengthening of populists and extremists.

The action coalition “For the Dignity of Our Cities” comprising 73 municipalities from eight federal states, calls on both the federal government and the states for immediate financial relief measures. The municipalities are structurally underfunded, a fact evidenced by a deficit of 31.9 billion euros in the previous year. They argue that financial support is essential to fulfill their local duties.
