Metin Hakverdi, the German government’s Transatlantic Coordinator (SPD), strongly criticized Washington for its decision not to permit the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to act as an election observer during the US Midterms on November 3, 2026. Speaking to the Tagesspiegel, Hakverdi pointed out that the United States had made a political commitment as an OSCE participating state to facilitate international election observation during its national elections.
The German coordinator stated that the exclusion of the OSCE from monitoring the midterm elections demonstrates a deepening skepticism towards international organizations on the part of the current US administration. Given that the integrity of American elections is currently a hot topic of political debate within the U.S., he noted that this non-invitation is particularly noteworthy. Hakverdi concluded that those who genuinely advocate for electoral integrity must ensure that election observers are not sidelined.
