German Officials Hit by State-Sponsored Cyber Attack via Signal; Authorities Claim Data Leak Contained

Following a recent phishing attack targeting federal government members, sources report that a potential data leak has reportedly been contained. Our editorial team learned this on Monday from sources within government circles. A spokesperson confirmed that the Chancellery suspects Russia is behind the attack. Those federal government members affected are said to be under the close monitoring and care of security authorities.

Media reports indicate that this wave of phishing attacks, which has been ongoing for months, has impacted at least ministers Karin Prien (CDU) and Verena Hubertz (SPD), among various members of the Bundestag, and Bundestag President Julia Klöckner (CDU).

Current findings from the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) suggest that a “likely state-controlled cyber actor” is executing these phishing campaigns through various messenger services, with Signal being a particularly highlighted platform. The overall focus of these sustained attacks includes high-profile individuals in politics, military and diplomatic sectors, as well as investigative journalists across Germany.
