German Politician Sounds Alarm Over Narges Mohammadi’s Health and Human Rights Crisis in Iran

Green politician Omid Nouripour voiced serious concerns regarding the deteriorating health of Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Addressing the issue, the Vice President of the German Bundestag accused both the German government and European states of neglecting the fates of political prisoners within Iran. He stated that the silence coming from Europe, including Germany, is “deafening” arguing that the only protection such individuals could possess in such a dangerous confinement situation is sustained international attention.

Nouripour expressed particular worry about Mohammadi. She had been transferred to a provincial hospital following a heart attack while incarcerated. Subsequently, she was moved to a Tehran hospital after a substantial deposit of money was made. Nouripour cautioned that if she were to die, the democratic opposition would lose a central figure. He noted that “Narges Mohammadi stands for a freedom movement that is currently being overwhelmed by geopolitical storms”. He questioned the status of political prisoners without such high public visibility, lamenting that even a Nobel laureate was not receiving adequate attention. He suggested that Europeans should be questioning if they hadn’t dropped “at least some audible word of mention”.

Furthermore, Nouripour highlighted the ongoing wave of executions targeting those detained for political reasons. He added that obtaining reliable information from Iran is incredibly difficult due to the country’s extended internet shutdown. The lack of proper care provided to detainees, according to him, showed that “the regime is prepared to do anything. It is now pivoting against everyone, not only in the Strait of Hormuz, but especially against its own people”.
