Germany Adopts Comprehensive Aviation Strategy to Boost Competitiveness, Sustainability, and Defense

The German federal government has finalized its new aviation strategy, announcing on Wednesday that the goal is to position Germany as a world leader in aviation-one that is economically and technically competitive, sovereign, resilient, and sustainable. For the first time, the strategy integrates the core operational areas of the aviation industry, civil air transport, and military aviation into a single cohesive approach.

Federal Economic Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) noted that the aviation industry experienced 19% growth last year, reaching a record employment figure of 130,000 people. She attributed this success to both the innovative industry itself and the continuous support offered by the federal government. According to Reiche, the new strategy will direct funding instruments toward addressing future challenges, particularly concerning the next generation of short- and medium-haul aircraft. To ensure all committed measures are implemented promptly, a dedicated steering group will be established.

Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) added that the strategy includes both short-term relief for the air transport sector-such as reducing the aviation tax until July 1, 2026-and medium- to long-term benefits provided through bureaucracy reduction and investments in sustainable technologies.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) highlighted the crucial role of military aviation in Germany’s defense capabilities, stating that this cross-sectoral strategy will generate significant synergies between civilian and military aspects of the industry.
