Germany Boosts EV Charging Stations in Multi-Unit Buildings with €500M Fund

The Federal Ministry of Transport has launched a new funding program aimed at establishing charging infrastructure within and around multi-unit housing buildings. According to the ministry’s announcement on Wednesday, the goal is to improve access to charging options for the residents of approximately 20 million housing units in these types of buildings. Of the roughly nine million parking spaces associated with these buildings, many are currently not equipped with charging facilities.

The subsidy covers both the purchase and the installation of private charging infrastructure, such as smart wallboxes and the necessary technical components. Furthermore, grid connections and required structural modifications are also eligible for funding. Applications for the program can be submitted immediately. Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder (CDU) stated that this initiative is crucial for advancing e-mobility and enhancing its usability for everyday life. The funding is designed to integrate e-mobility charging infrastructure into the daily routine of people residing in multi-unit dwellings.

The funding program provides a total volume of up to 500 million euros. Each charging point’s power output cannot exceed 22 kW. Eligible applicants include property owner associations, small and medium-sized enterprises, private owners of rented residential property, housing associations, and real estate companies with substantial housing portfolios. Applications from the first two groups will be processed immediately upon receipt, while a competitive bidding procedure is scheduled for companies with large housing stock.
