Germany Condemns China’s “Massive” Pacific Military Buildup and Nuclear Tests

The German government has reacted with concern to the recent missile test conducted by a Chinese nuclear submarine in the South Pacific. A spokesperson for the Foreign Office stated to dts Nachrichtenagentur on Tuesday their worry stems from the general increase in Chinese military activities and threat displays across the region. Peace and security in the Indo-Pacific are considered crucial interests not only for Germany but for Europe as a whole. The official noted that China holds a particular responsibility to maintain stability and peace in this area, particularly given its status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

They voiced particular concern regarding China’s “massive and in part opaque armament.” The spokesperson also confirmed that Germany has repeatedly urged China to engage with international arms control measures. “Commitment to risk reduction, dialogue, and transparency would be important steps in that direction,” the spokesperson added. The test itself took place on Monday in the Pacific and elicited sharp criticism from countries including Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
