Germany has lifted the visa requirement for Indian travelers transiting through German airports. The new regulation came into effect on Wednesday, following its publication in the Federal Law Gazette on Tuesday.
Indian passport holders can now connect directly to a third country without needing a separate airport transit visa (ATV) while in Germany. Previously, Indian citizens were required to obtain a transit visa when switching between flights at certain German airports, even if they did not leave the international transit area. This previous process involved additional effort and costs.
The change implements a commitment made by CDU politician Friedrich Merz during his trip to India this January. The German Embassy in India commented that this move underscores the federal government’s commitment to deepening German-Indian relations, facilitating passenger movement, and further strengthening economic ties.
It must be noted, however, that Indians still require a visa if they decide to exit the airport transit area.
