Germany Lacks Adequate Tools and Training to Fight Growing Cybercrime Threat

Dirk Peglow, chairman of the Federal German Criminal Police Association (BDK), stated that Germany is poorly equipped to fight crime committed online. Speaking to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” Peglow highlighted that police stations across the country still face significant deficiencies in combating cybercrime. He emphasized that cybercrime is no longer a peripheral issue; it affects businesses, critical infrastructure, government agencies, and individual citizens equally. According to Peglow, many local police departments are currently ill-equipped-both technically and in terms of specialized training-relative to the actual threat posed. Addressing the presentation of the federal cybercrime situation report by Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), the BDK chief issued several demands. He called for significantly improved technical equipment, additional specialized training and development, and clear powers for cyber defense to be integrated directly into the police laws of the various states.
