The German government is cautiously observing the situation in France following the escalation of violence during recent protests. A spokesperson for the Foreign Office told the dts Nachrichtenagentur on Monday that Germany, as a close partner of France, is closely monitoring events on the ground, noting with great concern the images emerging from Paris and Limoges. However, she also added that it appeared to have calmed down somewhat since yesterday.
The spokesperson asserted that while there may be necessary exchanges regarding issues and debates, violence on the streets of democracies is unacceptable. Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius reinforced this sentiment, confirming that France remains an effective partner despite the recent surge in violence.
The unrest over the weekend involved several cities experiencing outbursts of destruction, including cars being set on fire and storefronts being damaged. In Limoges, the historical town hall was notably burned down. Authorities have since arrested at least 2,400 people following the disturbances.
