The National Security Council held a meeting on Monday, chaired by the Federal Chancellor. As reported by government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius, the body discussed the war between Russia and Ukraine, alongside the topic of Artificial Intelligence, ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara.
The federal government affirmed its commitment to “decisively support” Ukraine and continue increasing pressure on Russia in collaboration with its partners. The primary objective for the German government remains reaching serious negotiations for a just and lasting peace. Furthermore, Germany supports Ukraine’s proposal for direct talks between the two nations, provided Europe and the United States participate.
Regarding Artificial Intelligence, the council deliberated on a “strategic approach” to dealing with advanced models, although no further specifics were disclosed. Another subject of discussion was general defence.
The National Security Council (NSR) was established in 2025. Its membership comprises various cabinet ministers and also includes permanent guests, such as the Inspector General of the Bundeswehr and the heads of intelligence services.
