The Green and Left parties are allocating record sums for their campaigns in the states of Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to statements from the parties, the Grassroots movement in Saxony-Anhalt has secured a campaign budget of approximately €1.5 million. This total is broken down into around €1.2 million for the state association and €300,000 for the district branches. This represents the highest ever budget for the state association, more than double the previous record. Forty percent of this funding originated from donations, which were almost exclusively provided by private individuals, indicating a significantly higher level of private financial support compared to past state election campaigns.
In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Greens have also seen their campaign funds bolstered by donations. A spokesperson stated that the budget for the state election campaign, which was set at €350,000 near the end of 2025, has since been increased to €800,000. This increase is attributed to several factors, notably strong fundraising appeals from the federal association, as well as support from other regional and local branches. Furthermore, the cooperation of the “einpunktmehr” donation drive, led by entrepreneurs from Hamburg and Baden-Württemberg, has played a role by doubling private donations to the Greens.
The Left Party is also heavily investing in the eastern state elections, relying on record funding. The Left party in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is running with a budget of €600,000, which represents a new high for the party. Similar to the Greens, the Left party in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern noted an above-average volume of donations, all of which came from private citizens.
In Saxony-Anhalt, the Left Party’s budget is slightly lower, standing at about €562,000. Nevertheless, a spokesperson noted that this is the party’s highest-ever campaign budget compared to the elections of 2021 and 2016. The parties also observe a higher volume of donations in Saxony-Anhalt than in previous state elections. They cautiously suggest a link between this increase in private support and the current heightened political focus on the Left, in conjunction with their recent polling numbers.
