Green Leader Doubts Coalition Survival, Questioning Stability of Center-Right Government

Katharina Dröge, the Green party parliamentary group chair in the Bundestag, openly expressed doubts regarding the ability of the black-and-red coalition to remain stable for the full three years of its term. Speaking on RTL and ntv’s program “Frühstart” on Wednesday, she criticized Friedrich Merz’s suitability for the role of Chancellor.

“I find that he does not possess the necessary practical skills to serve as Chancellor” Dröge stated. She further criticized his general working methodology, suggesting it had “failed”. She pointed out the tendency to operate by declaring directives and setting deadlines without any verifiable means of meeting them.

According to Dröge, Merz’s failures extend beyond national policy; his approach fails to unite even his own governing party and the respective state premiers. She argued that Merz needs to undertake a fundamental reassessment of his strategy to stabilize the coalition.

Concluding her remarks, Dröge stated, “I do not know if this government will manage through the entire legislative period. If Friedrich Merz doubts it himself, then the coalition is shaky”. Despite her criticisms, she wished the German democratic system success.
