Greens Demand Comprehensive Reform of Germany’s Intelligence Services Ahead of BND Anniversary

On the 70th anniversary of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), the Greens have pushed the federal government to accelerate reforms of the intelligence agencies. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Thursday, Konstantin von Notz, Deputy Green Parliamentary Group Chair, stated that for the services to perform their crucial work during a highly volatile geopolitical period, they require clear political support and direction. He suggested that the current federal government is failing to provide these necessary assurances.

Von Notz, who is also the Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Control Committee, emphasized that the intelligence services urgently need a modern and rule-of-law basis for their daily activities. He criticized the parliament for its inaction, noting that no reform proposals have yet been presented for updating either the BND or the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) laws. He characterized this delay as a “massive failure regarding security policy”.

According to the Green MP, a reform is not only long overdue but is also constitutionally necessary. He stressed that a robust foreign intelligence service holds elevated importance for the security of the nation.
