The Green Party is demanding that German law be tightened, modeled after French legislation, to improve countermeasures against the Russian shadow fleet. According to Helge Limburg, the Greens’ policy spokesman for legal affairs, the federal government urgently needs to improve its effectiveness in dealing with ships operating under false flags. Limburg argued that other neighboring states of the North and Baltic Seas, particularly France, possess sharper, sometimes punitive sanctioning options against these vessels, and Germany should align itself with these practices. Furthermore, the legal spokesman called for the Federal Republic to collaborate with EU partners internationally to push for revisions to maritime law agreements. He emphasized that the Russian shadow fleet should not exploit the right of peaceful passage to boost its war economy or to survey and sabotage critical infrastructure in the North and Baltic Seas.
