CDU Narrows Gap to AfD in Latest Poll, SPD Gains While Greens and Left Fall

According to the current “Politbarometer” conducted by the Mannheimer Forschungsgruppe Wahlen for ZDF, the Union (CDU/CSU) appears to be significantly narrowing the gap with the AfD. If a federal election were held next Sunday, the CDU/CSU would rise to 23%, marking a two-percentage-point increase compared to the last survey. Conversely, the AfD is expected to decline, securing 26%, a drop of two percentage points.

The SPD is also projected to gain ground, reaching 14% (+1). Meanwhile, the Green Party and Die Linke are expected to lose support, with the Greens falling to 13% (-2) and Die Linke dropping to 11% (-1). The Free Democratic Party (FDP) is projected to remain stable at 3%. All other parties combined are expected to account for 10% (+2), but none of them are projected to achieve a threshold of 3%.

The polling for the Politbarometer was conducted by the Mannheim research group Wahlen on behalf of ZDF. Interviews were gathered via phone and online between October 20 and October 22, 2026, from 1,225 eligible voters.
