Grüne Slam Government over Family Policies, Protesting Cuts to Child Benefits and Welfare

The Greens’ parliamentary faction is sharply criticizing the federal government’s family policy, calling it unjust. According to Misbah Khan, the vice-chair of the faction, families are suffering the consequences of the current administration’s redistribution policies. She stated that key services are being reduced while, simultaneously, billions are being mobilized to slightly lower fuel prices and secure massive profits for oil corporations.

Speaking about CDU politician Karin Prien, Khan added that the Federal Minister for Family Affairs should be reminded that she is struggling with the direction and priorities of her own government’s family policy. However, merely being dissatisfied is not enough. Khan emphasized that she is not just an observer of this development but bears the responsibility of strengthening families, not undermining them.

This Thursday, the Greens faction plans to introduce a resolution in the Bundestag opposing planned cuts to parental allowance, child support subsidies, children’s immediate bonus payments, housing benefits, and payments for sick child days. The proposed resolution notes that for many, the inherent happiness of having children has become dependent on financial capabilities. Furthermore, it claims that these planned cuts will disproportionately affect households at higher risk of poverty-specifically single parents, large families, and families with an immigration or refugee background-during a time when costs for rent, groceries, and energy are rising.
