The Green party in the Bundestag has sharply criticized the Union’s proposal to eliminate mobility subsidies for recipients of the Bürgergeld (Citizen’s Income), suggesting they should instead be provided with the Deutschlandticket free of charge as a kind benefit.
Swantje Michaelsen, the Green parliamentary group’s spokesperson for transport policy, told the Funke-Mediengruppe papers (Thursday edition) that the CDU’s suggestion overlooks the central problem. She emphasized that “mobility is a prerequisite for social participation and must remain accessible to everyone-without paternalism or additional hurdles”.
Michaelsen noted that the current mobility allowance within Bürgergeld is insufficient to cover the full €63 cost of the Deutschlandticket. She called on both the Union and the SPD to adopt the Greens’ demand for a nationwide social ticket, adding that the requested free child accompaniment would be of particular benefit to low-income people.
