Hannover 96 has released Christian Titz from his duties as the head coach of the professional team. Assistant coach André Kilian, who moved from 1. FC Magdeburg to Hannover with Titz in the summer of 2025, has also been relieved of his responsibilities. The second-division club announced these changes on Monday, stating that an interim solution would be in place for the upcoming match against VfL Bochum.
The decision followed a thorough analysis of the team’s development in recent weeks-a period spanning from the summer preparations (after narrowly missing promotion with fourth place), through the start of the new season, and right up to their most recent performances. Following the 1:2 defeat at 1. FC Nürnberg on Friday evening, Hannover 96 sits in 15th place in the 2. Bundesliga with four points from five games.
Jonas Boldt, the CEO of 96, commented that their joint goal in the previous season had been to build upon their success, fueled by the reasonable hope of generating momentum for the new campaign. However, he acknowledged that this “did not materialize in the desired form.” Following the loss to Nürnberg, “open and honest conversations” took place. Boldt stated that the team had “lacked stability and clarity in crucial moments” and failed to achieve a consistent level of performance. He also pointed out that “negative patterns” had become visible, patterns that were also noticeable towards the end of the previous season.
The club plans to arrange a replacement for the head coach position on a “short timeframe.” For the upcoming home game against VfL Bochum on Sunday, U23 coach Lars Barlemann will temporarily oversee the 96 reserve team. He will be supported by his U23 assistant coach, Christian Schulz, along with the previous coaching staff and personnel.
