Hertha BSC secured their first victory of the new season on Friday evening, defeating VfL Bochum 1-0 in the opening match of the league campaign.
Despite initially being a low-scoring affair, Hertha dominated the play for large portions of the game, eventually earning the crucial lead before the break. The scoreline changed in the 39th minute when Sebastian Grönning scored, following a precise cross from the midfield and curling the ball into the net for a 1-0 advantage.
The match was briefly interrupted during the first half after Banner, located in the opposing fans’ section, obscured the view with a flare. Following the resumption, Hertha continued to be the more active side, although Bochum began to mount increasing pressure only after halftime.
In the final stages, the hosts created several good opportunities, but Bochum was unable to find an equalizer. Philipp Hofmann missed a header, and Gerrit Holtmann had a strong shot from an advantageous position. Furthermore, Hertha goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck expertly defended against a dangerous free-kick taken by Maximilian Wittek.
Despite the offensive push from Bochum in the closing minutes, the Berlin players consistently defended their narrow lead and carried the success through to the end. Hertha thus enjoyed a successful start to the new season, while VfL Bochum began the campaign without a single point.
